Yoga Teaches Us How to Interact in The World

Updated: Apr 10

Yoga teaches awareness. Through reflections and observations, we become aware of our strengths, challenges, and priorities.

Yoga teaches us to care for ourselves with mindful awareness and nonjudgement. When we engage in Pranayama “breath focus” at the beginning of our practice, we settle into a contract of silence. We either sign the dotted line and melt into the solitude within or we fidget and question our tenacity to commit and focus.

When we explore movement through asanas, we gain a better understanding of our immediate space and how we maneuver within it. As we work with our abilities and limitations, we find a greater understanding of life’s contract— the path laid before us.

Through self-awareness, we actively seek balance in our lives. That balance is different for all of us. Each individual must discover the priorities and decisions that weigh on the scale and teeter the balance of life. Yoga helps us to find and achieve that balance, allowing us to care for others without self-detriment.

Are we quick to judge ourselves… patient… compassionate… empathetic… loving? Our self-talk and interactions with the internal influence our attitudes and outlooks on life. These, in turn, impact how we respond to and engage with others and the world. How are we interacting with others, reacting to life’s circumstances, and releasing or controlling our emotions? Are we gifting others these same understandings?

It is through the self-care and self-compassion that yoga offers that we truly learn how to care for others. How we communicate and respond— both positively and negatively— impacts ourselves, others, and the natural world around us.

Yoga is a gift— a gift to ourselves, a gift to our fellow humans, and a gift to the world. Make that gift count!
