Yoga is Compassion
What is compassion? Compassion is defined as “sympathetic concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others”. Instead of sympathy, I would say true compassion embodies empathy. Why empathy? Empathy allows us to truly relate and understand what others are going through based on our own experiences. But even if we haven’t personally experienced what another person is going through, we can still embrace compassion at any level.
Our world needs compassion right now more than ever! The world we live in with Covid-19 offers many challenges: physical distancing, uncertainties, emotional upheaval, and disconnect. Yet, the pandemic has also offered many blessings: more quality time with our immediate family, time to do activities we’ve put off, and the reevaluation of priorities.
Whether we are faced with a challenge or a blessing, compassion comes centerstage.
Compassion is not just for others. We must also have compassion for ourselves. Yoga teaches self-care and self-awareness of how we are in the world around us. Yoga offers a physical practice of asanas so you are able to notice and assess your presence in a physical space and how your body responds. Accepting where you are in the moment without judgement is the start of compassion. For how can you have true compassion for others without first having compassion for yourself?
All of our actions affect the world either positively or negatively. Hopefully for most of us, it is a positive impact. But we humans are not perfect creatures. Yet, we have the capability to learn, change, and become better. Yoga can be a roadmap for that journey.
Yoga allows us to connect as a community, whether online or in-person. We recognize that we are not alone in this journey. When we open our hearts to allow connections with others, we receive encouragement, support, and love. Isn’t that what compassion is all about?
Yoga offers us time to connect with our breath, finding renewal and peace. It’s in the quiet moments of breath control that we focus our minds to discover our intentions and priorities. It’s in the calming space of Savasana that we allow our presence to be: to be here, to be in the world, to become better for ourselves and others. Yoga graces us with presence, acceptance, and peace so we are able to bring positive change in the world.
Embrace compassion every day! Embrace it with Connections Yoga:
