Savasana is a Cup of Tea

Updated: Jan 17

Ever heard, "The best part of yoga is Savasana"? Despite this well-earned compliment, Savasana is not my cup of tea.

Savasana is like the Earl Grey tea of yoga. Earl Grey is one of the most recognized tea flavors in the world. Hence, when most people think of yoga, they think of Lotus Pose "Padmasana" with Gyan Mudra, Tree Pose "Vrksasana", or Corpse Pose "Savasana".

Earl Grey tea is subtle, a baseline of flavor. It's not that I find Savasana boring. It does what it is supposed to do—relax the mind and body, let go, and allow the body and mind to reset at the end of your practice. Therefore, Earl Grey may be the exact flavor of tea that you crave.

Yes, I know. I'm a yoga teacher. I'm supposed to love a good Savasana. I just don't fit that mold. I need something more.

My cup of tea is fruity and sweet like Raspberry or Wild Berry Zinger. I like my tea sweetened even more to draw out the fruitiness. I don't need tea that's subtle, soothing, or draws me towards restfulness. In yoga, I want to settle and ground but with more purpose than just letting go. Supported Reclined Butterfly "Supta Baddha Konasana" with blocks under the thighs serves me well at the end of my practices.

Now, when I drink my tea, I prefer to drink it from the Japanese Obori Somayaki teacups at the lakehouse. My uncle gave them to my grandmother when he served in the Navy. These teacups are double walled, offering a barrier to prevent burning your hands when drinking tea. In yoga, I'm always going to offer you another layer—variations in poses so you can choose the exact flavor of tea you want in your practice.

Despite my personal preference of tea, I'm still offering Savasana at the end of your practice. It will be a bit like Constant Comment tea—orangey and satisfying. I'll also never just drop you into the teacup, letting you swirl around on your own. I'll gentle pour you in, allowing you to settle in your cup. My Savasana is not long enough to bask in complete relaxation of Chamomile tea. You might titter on the edge, but I'll reel you back in and bring your tea back to room temperature.

Savasana is just part of your yoga journey. From Pranayama to Namaste (whether it's at the start and/or at the end), it is a journey.

Experience the taste of tea, from the beginning to end. Be a connoisseur of yoga.
