Combating Physical Distancing

Updated: Jan 17

The spread of coronavirus-19 across the world has brought a swift halt to most of our social interactions. Although it provides opportunities for being productive in our homes and spending more time with our families, challenges will arise the longer we stay distanced from others. Society will face greater isolation, loneliness, worry, fear, stress, anxiety, depression, and uncertainty, a big concern for those individuals who already deal with these issues.

So, how do we as a community minimize these concerns while maintaining a sense of peace and connection during this time of physical distancing? One option is yoga. Yoga helps calm the body and mind. It decreases stress, anxiety, and depression in addition to a plethora of physical and emotional health benefits. We can do yoga in our homes, finding time to practice daily. Sure, yoga is one way to decrease these looming concerns. But it doesn’t solve the lack of connection with others. We are all made for social interactions.

Online yoga can help combat social isolation. Many teachers that taught at Namaste Yoga have set up online classes using Zoom, an electronic video communication service that allows participants to see and talk to each other. Students can choose to keep their videos on so the instructor can offer suggestions and allow fellow students to feel a sense of practicing together. Students can chat before and after class which helps maintain the positive relationships we have in our yoga community.

As students and teachers, we realize online classes are not the same as being physically present in a yoga class. However, being able to connect with others and practice together offers so many benefits to combat issues that may come with physical distancing.

Use this time over the next few months to grow in your yoga practice and connect with others. We need to see the faces of our yoga community, to hear each other’s voices, and to know that we are all in this together- supporting and encouraging one another until we can physically be together again.
